Arrowhead carpenters replacing siding panels on a chimney chase

Wood Rot, Siding & Carpentry

We don't paint over problems. Rotted siding, trim, soffits, fascia, and door frames are cut out and replaced with cedar, LP SmartSide, James Hardie, AZEK, or PVC by our carpenters, then painted so you can't tell where the repair was.

The Most Common Thing We Find

Most Kansas City Homes Have Some Rot. Most Homeowners Don't Know It.

Rot starts small and hides well: the bottom of a door frame, the end of a trim board, a section of siding behind a downspout. By the time it's obvious, it has often spread to the boards around it.

That's why every exterior estimate includes a walk-around where we point out soft spots, failed caulk, and exposed wood. Homeowners tell us it's one of the most valuable parts of the visit.

FAQ

Wood Rot Questions

Do You Do Carpentry Work?

Yes. Carpentry is a big part of our repair work. We install new siding, fascia, soffits, trim, door trim, window trim, corner boards, frieze boards, garage door jambs, window sills, columns, and chimney chase siding, using cedar, LP SmartSide, James Hardie, AZEK, or PVC. Everything we install is caulked, primed, and painted to blend with the rest of your home.

What Causes Wood Rot On A House?

Wood rot is caused by fungi that grow when wood stays wet. On houses it usually starts where water collects: failed caulk joints, the bottoms of door frames and trim, siding near roofs and gutters, and boards close to the ground or decks.

Can Rotted Wood Just Be Filled And Painted?

Small surface damage can sometimes be repaired with epoxy, but rot that has gone soft or deep needs to be cut out and replaced. Painting over rot traps moisture and lets it spread. We'll show you exactly what we find and recommend the right fix.

What Materials Do You Use For Replacement?

We match or upgrade what's on your home: cedar, LP SmartSide, James Hardie fiber cement, and PVC trim. PVC and fiber cement are great choices for areas that stay wet because they don't rot.

Do You Only Do Wood Rot Repair As Part Of A Paint Job?

Most of our wood repair is done alongside an exterior repaint so everything is primed, painted, and warrantied together. Call us to talk about your project and we'll let you know the best approach.

How Do You Price Wood Rot Repair?

We find and mark visible rot during the estimate and price it in your quote. If we uncover hidden damage once boards come off, we show you photos and discuss it with you before doing any additional work.

How Do I Know If My House Has Wood Rot?

Press on the bottoms of door frames, window sills, trim boards near the ground, and fascia behind gutters. Soft, spongy, cracked, or discolored wood usually means rot. We check for it on every exterior estimate.

Should I Repair Wood Rot Before Painting My House?

Yes. Painting over rotted wood hides the problem and the paint will fail quickly. We replace rotted wood first so your new paint job has a solid surface to protect.
